Code Adam

This morning we went to Walmart to get some things. Kate wanted to walk so I let her only if she stayed with me. Well, we were looking at toys and Kate was at an end cap looking at books. I was just around the corner from her and I thought she knew where I was and I was fine with her looking at the books. A couple minutes later, I walked around the corner to get her and she was GONE. I called her name and started looking up and down other aisles and couldn't find her anywhere. When this has happened before I quickly find her, but this time all the aisles were empty!!! I went in panic mode. Luckily there were two Walmart people nearby (I think one was an asst. manager) and I quickly asked for their help in finding my daughter. I immediately thought the worst thinking someone had kidnapped her. I yelled Kate's name and the man told me he needed a description. I quickly gave it to him, but kept yelling Kate's name. And I mean yelling it. The man kept saying "ma'am, we will help you", but I really think he wanted me to stop yelling. :) At this point, I didn't care what he said because I was so scared she was gone! Everyone was looking at me, but I didn't care. (It's funny what you'll do in situations like these and you don't care what others think!) Anyway, I overheard on the intercom "code Adam cancelled" and then I knew she was found b/c I knew what code Adam meant (it means that a child is lost). Phew! I walked with the worker up to the front to get Kate and on the way this mom with two kids in her cart asked if that was my girl and I said "yes". She said she found her running down an aisle crying so she took her up front and she knew how I felt. I gave her a hug for helping me. When I got to Kate I gave her a hug and told her I was glad they found her. In the car on the way home Kate told me she was running trying to find me and the lady helped her. She said she was nice and gave her a small chair to sit in. On the way home, we stopped at Panda Express to get "chicken and noodles" for lunch because Kate has been wanting them and today she can have them or whatever else she wants! I'm glad she is safe.

YIKES! Give her a hug from Grandma Dee Ann. It happens so fast! I have had that same sinking feeling. There is nothing, and I mean nothing like it. So not good! I can't wait to hug her myself.

Oh, I hate those moments and all the awful thoughts that go through your mind! I had a scare like that a week ago at the mall play area. I was near tears and Noah was just playing with no clue that he was lost. I'm glad Kate was safe!

I was feeling the stress just reading this and was tearing up the whole time So scary, I'm so glad she is safe. How sweet of you to hug the lady that took her up front, that made me cry the most. All reservation does go out the window and Mama Bear can show up fast when it comes to our kids! I'm glad you had a lunch together. :)

When my girls were little, a lost child was a scary thing but ins today's world it is frightening. I panic now when my grands are with me and wander. Hopefully she will stick closer. I'm glad you found her. I hope she is okay and glad it was a nice mom that found her. I hope you are doing okay too as my heart was pounding reading about it.

Heidi I am so sorry you lost her. I almost starting crying. I used to work at Walmart years ago and my heart would sink every time I heard the words "Code Adam." I think we all go through that panic mode at least once and it is nice to know there are people out there who really have good hearts and want to do the right things and help others. I bet Kate sure enjoyed her noodles! She is such a cutie!

If I had seen you and didn't know you, I would have thought "only at Walmart do you see all these crazy people all the time."

Ha ha. I'm glad she's safe.

Oh my goodness, my heart sunk as I read this! It's never been that bad for me, but I have had brief moments when she is out of my sight at the store and it is scary. Glad she was found!

Oh, crazy! My mind has no trouble thinking up the worst possible scenario where our kids are concerned. But to be in the actual situation. . . So glad she's safe and that there was someone there to help her.

oh my Heidi! We have talked on the phone about twelve times since this incident. We have texted about 5 times since this incident. And this is the first time i HEARD about this incident!!!???? Heidi: this is a big deal. I was tearing up a bit for you. (not for Kate b/c she got her noodles. I think she was tricking you -- she wanted that for lunch so it was a sham -- she really wasn't lost. That lady was in on it...) :)
